Why I Stopped Specifying LED Video Walls by Pixel Pitch Alone

Maintenance and Total Cost of Ownership

Here's the mundane but critical part. The pixel pitch and the display technology are important, but I've learned to look at the lifecycle. Having a certified, engineered system streamlined that approval process.

I also acknowledge that budgets are a reality. Not everyone can afford a premium Planar system. I'm not telling anyone to spend money they don't have. My argument is simply that the cheapest upfront quote can be the most expensive choice over time. Look at the whole system, not just the pixels. Also, you should always verify pricing. This was accurate as of Q1 2025. These display markets change fast, and quotes vary significantly by region and by the integrator's workload.

Bottom Line

The technology roadmap for LED video walls is exciting. Planar Luxe MicroLED is stunning in person. Transparent OLED is impressive. Volumetric displays are a conversation starter. But taking the procurement route, I'd argue the industry is shifting focus. Buyers are getting smarter about total cost of ownership. We're asking about the suspension system, the electronics, the service response time, and the upgrade path. The pixel pitch is one checkbox, not the final answer.

So, when you're planning your 2026 display budget, start with the application. Then look at the engineering. Then the cost per project and the maintenance. The pixels will take care of themselves.
